Patient Resources: Intracranial Haemorrhage

Intracranial haemorrhage (i.e., accumulation of blood within the cranial vault/skull) may occur within brain substance or the surrounding spaces.

Depending upon the location of bleeding, haemorrhage is of following types:

  1. Intracerebral haemorrhage (also called intraparenchymal haemorrhage), ICH in short: bleeding within the brain substance
    1.

  2. Intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH): Bleeding within the brain cavities (ventricles)
    1.

  3. Epidural Haemorrhage (EDH): bleeding between the skull and the outermost of the three membranes surrounding the brain i.e the dura mater
  4.

  5. Subdural hematoma (SDH): bleeding between the outermost dura and the middle arachnoid membranes
  6.

  7. Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH): bleeding between the middle arachnoid membrane and the innermost membrane - the 'pia mater'
